These are heavy-duty garden stools made from recycled railway sleepers, that are reminiscent of Stonehenge (and to some folk a particular scene in the film Spinal Tap).
I like the Pi symbol and the number’s mathematical relevance, so when I was designing the Stoolhenge stool I wanted to incorporate the image of Pi as well. The wide foot of the legs creates a Pi-like form and also creates a stable base.
My first set sold out immediately, and since then I have made many more to special order. Delivery times can be difficult to predict as I have difficulty in getting a regular supply of recyclable sleepers; often they are too old to be useable. They can also be constructed from new sleeper material but this loses some of the texture which gives the recycled version their ancient hewn-from-rock look, and also raises the price.
They are usually cut from one sleeper and I try to retain original features where ever possible, in particular I try to utilise the old bolt holes (left from holding the rail chairs in place) for the oak dowel joints that attach the top to the legs. The dowels are fixed in place using an offset foxtailed hardwood (oak) dowel joint.
The sleepers were pressure treated with creosote before use on railways and are not really suitable for indoor use due to the strong aroma. They can exude tarry goo in hot weather and therefore care must be taken when sitting on these not to damage clothing or have direct skin contact.
Stoolhenges have been used as tables, and can be made double width.
Each stool is very heavy; typically around 25kg although this varies depending on size, wood type (usually Jarrah) and water content. This makes delivery further afield expensive, but I am happy to deliver in the Edinburgh area at cost.
